Modern Poem

I’m a virtual voyager, a modern Magellan,
exploring unventured, rendered dimensions.
I’m a law enforcer and a most wanted felon.
I’m a fierce warrior, a hero, a legend.

I’m releasing years of pent up aggression
by relentlessly, endlessly tapping and pressing.
I’m happily, rapidly zapping synapses.

My body remains so unnaturally static.
My mind slips inside and I find that time lapses.

Once connected I can achieve impossible tasks.
Whole empires crumble and fall as I pass.
Vast lands are conquered and many lives saved,
but any achievements felt quickly fade.

As I wake up and face the cold light of day,
my senses are dulled, my existence maintained,
by feigning an interest in the cold and mundane.

I’ve been working solely for earning a wage,
but yearning escape to the world of the game,
where dreams are realised and fortunes are made,
and empires rise – and fall – in one day.

When I was seven I started copying poems out of a book and telling people they were mine. When I ran out of good ones to copy, I had to start writing my own. I have been performing and organising nights on the UK spoken word scene now for over seven years and am most of the way through writing the first draft of my first novel 'Zedlist', which is serialised on here. As the story is in fetal form, any critiques or suggestions are most welcome.
