Poem

 

it was the solitary light that
blinked in the window across the
alley and reminded me that
somewhere else you were waiting
for me to light my own
to send you the smoke signals of my readiness
while we waited for the breeze to come and breathe our
lilting melodies over to one another as
the birds’ hymns mixed with
our own
