Maya Angelou said that being American means being white and everyone else has to hyphenate
But what about those who hyphenate their lives in order to come together as a single unit
Without titles or distinctions
After all, can anything truly be understood within the context of a single dash
Or without the repercussions of gender or privilege or history upon its basis
Perhaps hyphenation should not limit us to an axis built upon the empathy of others
But perhaps in the knowledge that we are all minorities
Whose time has not yet come
